Granada's climate month by month and what to pack
Updated on 18 October 2026

Granada sits about 700 metres above sea level, between the fertile plain and Sierra Nevada, which gives it a continental climate, quite different from the Andalusian coast: very hot, dry summers, cold winters and a big difference in temperature between day and night. Knowing what to expect helps you choose when to come and what to pack.
The seasons
- Summer (June to September). July and August are very hot, with highs that often go over 35 °C and hardly any rain. Nights cool down a little, but not much. It’s best to sightsee early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
- Autumn (October and November). Mild days and cool nights. The rain comes back, though it usually arrives in spells of a few days.
- Winter (December to February). Fresh, often sunny days but cold nights, with frequent frosts. Sierra Nevada is covered in snow and you can see the white peaks from the city. Snow in the city itself is very rare.
- Spring (March to May). Along with autumn, the best time to visit Granada: pleasant temperatures, gardens in bloom and snow still on the mountains. It can rain on some days, especially in March and April.
Rain falls mostly from autumn to spring; in summer it hardly rains at all.
Month by month
These figures are approximate and rounded, based on long-term averages. Every year is different and heatwaves are becoming more frequent, so check the AEMET forecast before you travel.

Notice the gap between the two columns: in Granada it’s normal to be in short sleeves at midday and need a jacket at night, especially in spring and autumn.
What to pack
- In summer: light clothes, a cap or hat, sunglasses and sun cream. Something thin for the evening and for air-conditioned interiors.
- In spring and autumn: layers. A T-shirt for the day, a jumper or jacket for the evening, and a folding umbrella just in case.
- In winter: a proper coat, scarf and gloves for the evenings. If you’re going up to Sierra Nevada, snow gear.
- All year round: comfortable shoes with good soles. The Albayzín and the Sacromonte are cobbled and steep, and you’ll walk a lot at the Alhambra.
The cave and the heat
One of the perks of staying in a cave house is that the rock keeps a very steady temperature all year round. In the height of summer, when it’s sweltering outside, it stays cool inside the cave, and in winter it doesn’t get as cold as an ordinary house. It’s the perfect spot for a siesta in July. To find out more about the house, see the cave house page and, before you book, read what’s worth knowing in before booking.
Tips
- In summer, plan your day like a local: sightseeing in the morning, a rest during the hottest hours and a stroll at sunset, when the Albayzín viewpoints fill with people.
- If you’re coming for the snow, the ski season in Sierra Nevada usually runs from late November or December to April, depending on the year. There’s more in our Sierra Nevada guide.
